Vaccination for people within 18 to 44 age group began in Assam on Friday morning. The drive which was symbolically launched on May 5 began in full-swing from today.

Taking to Twitter, health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote, “Pursuing vision of Hon PM Sri @narendramodi on vaccination for 18-44 age group, glad to share that #COVIDVaccination drive for this category also has started in Assam today across 244 centres.”

The vaccination drive is being conducted across 244 centres in the state following the arrival of fresh batches of vaccine doses. The vaccine has been made free by the Assam government.

A sizeable number of individuals turned up to the vaccination centres to get themselves inoculated.

Meanwhile, journalists in Guwahati got their first jab of COVID-19 vaccine today at the Guwahati Press Club.

Family members of the journalists would also be vaccinated under this drive subsequently.

Assam’s daily Covid graph is nearing the 5,000 mark, as the state reported 4,936 fresh cases of Coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours while 46 succumbed to the infection.

Kamrup Metropolitan is the worst affected with 1,353 positive cases. Moreover, the district administration has declared areas with most Covid cases as containment zones.

The health department added that over 61,000 people were tested for COVID-19 in the past 24 hours, and the positivity rate now stands at 8.04%
