The Assam government is in favour of continuing with many of the lockdown restrictions to keep a check on the COVID-19 situation, despite the Centre’s new set of guidelines for Unlock 3 to allow reopening of activities outside containment zones.

According to reports, the state government wishes to continue with the night curfew along with other restrictions including ban on inter-district movement till August 15. There will be limited applications of Unlock 3 guidelines issued by the ministry of home affairs (MHA) on Wednesday.

“I feel till August 15, Assam will be in between unlock and lockdown. The COVID-19 situation is gradually returning to normalcy, so the government doesn’t want to let it once again spiral out of control,” health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma told media persons on Thursday.

Even as Centre has allowed gyms and other activities to open from August 5, the state is yet to take a call. The night curfew in Assam came into effect on March 25, along with the rest of the country.

The MHA guidelines scrapped the night curfew in Unlock 3, the third phase of lifting of COVID-19-related restrictions across the country. The Centre in its directives on the next phase of unlock allowed the reopening of yoga centres and gyms which are not in the containment zones.

However, the Assam government is likely to decide the future course of action at a meeting to be held on August 2.
