In a big boost to tourism, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Friday formally inaugurated the longest road arch bridge in India – the Wahrew Bridge at Sohbar in the state’s East Khasi Hills district.
The bridge was constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 49.395 crore under the Non-Lapsable Central Pool of Resources (NLCPR) of the Ministry of Development of North East Region (DoNER).
Taking to Twitter after the inauguration ceremony, the Meghalaya Chief Minister wrote, “Inaugurated the Longest Road Arch Bridge in India, the Wahrew Bridge at #Sohbar constructed at ₹49.395 Cr under NLCPR of @MDoNER_India, connecting Bholaganj & Sohbar to Nongjri.”
“We dedicate this to the progress of the area & (L)Dr Donkupar Roy,” Sangma added.
Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, Assembly Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh, local MLA Balajied Synrem, and senior government officials among others were also present on the occasion.
The iconic structure will connect Bholaganj and Sohbar with Nongjri. The construction of the bridge was completed in December 2018.
