Conrad Sangma confirms HSPDP MLAs have pledged their support to NPP

Amid protests regarding the two HSPDP MLAs extending their support to NPP, party national president and Meghalaya CM designate, Conrad Sangma confirmed on Saturday that the HSPDP MLAs have pledged their support to NPP and would be part of the government to be sworn in on March 7 in
Shillong.
Sangma’s confirmation comes within hours of the state witnessing violent protests by NGOs like HYC and HITO against HSPDP MLAs Methodious Dkhar and Shakliar Warjri’s decision to support the NPP-led Meghalaya government.
“The MLAs have been elected by the people of the constituencies, and hence it is the mandate of the people and therefore the MLAs will decide who they will support. The NGOs may have their concerns on the issues and that’s separate from the election mandate,” Sangma said.
Condemning the protests Sangma said “It is very very unfortunate that this kind of incident has happened, and it very sad also to see that this is the kind of behaviour we have seen which Meghalaya have never seen before. Meghalaya has always believed in democracy we have always accepted the mandate of the people and this election has given the mandate the people have elected the representatives and based on the democratic process this government is being formed and now coming out and creating this violence has never been seen in Meghalaya and I am sure the people of Meghalaya are not with this kind of behaviour and this is something completely unacceptable.”

Speaking about the swearing-in ceremony of the new government, Conrad Sangma said, “The swearing-in ceremony will be on the 7th of March and I have received the letter from the Governor inviting me to form the government, the swearing in will be at 11 am at Raj Bhawan (Governor’s house) where we are expecting Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and other political leaders as of now”.
Sangma said that he has the support of 32 MLAs, one more than the majority mark to form the government in a 60-member Assembly.
Commenting on the buzz that this time there is a demand for a Khasi CM (Conrad is a Garo), said “A process has been always defined it is not about a person individually from a particular community has to be there or should not be there that is not how democracy works it is based on the mandate which is given to the people given by the people and it is based on that mandate the members have been elected”
Sangma who would be serving the state as its 13th CM is looking forward to another five year term and said that he would ensure that all the partners in the government get space, they are consulted and he is able to carry the team along for better governance.
