The Congress in Manipur has moved the State Election Commission seeking for free, fair and peaceful elections in the state.

Congress also brought to the election commission’s notice about the 14 incidents of poll violence that occurred in 6 constituencies in the run-up to the elections.

The Congress delegation was led by Jairam Ramesh who is the AICC senior observer for the Manipur elections.

Ramesh alleged that Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is indulging in incidents of violence as the party is well aware of its defeat in the poll battle.

The Congress leader expressed concern over the fact that the administration is allegedly not doing enough to ensure free and peaceful elections.

It may be mentioned that yesterday tension erupted in Churachandpur district in the poll-bound after gunshots were fired during a clash between unidentified miscreants and supporters of the Kuki People’s Alliance.

The situation turned ugly after the miscreants tried to block the KPA’s rally at Singngat playground.

As per reports, the miscreants tried to obstruct the KPA supporters from holding a rally in support of its party candidate Chinlungthang.

It has also been learnt that a similar clash also broke out between unidentified miscreants and the KPA day before yesterday too.

Manipur will go for polls in two phases. The first phase will be held on February 28 and the second on March 5.

The vote counting will take place on March 10.
