Compensation for slain trucker after consultation with BSF: Meghalaya Govt

Minister Paul Lyngdoh said that there has been SOP violations by BSF and he also questioned what was BSF doing away from the international border

The Meghalaya government is in touch with the BSF to discuss the compensation for the next of kin of the local trucker, Roning Nongkynrih, who was shot dead by BSF personnel at Mawshun village in East Khasi Hills district on May 5, informed Cabinet Minister and Meghalaya government spokesperson Paul Lyngdoh today.

Briefing media persons in Shillong today, Minister Paul Lyngdoh said that Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong who is also in charge of Home will hold a review meeting with BSF in the coming days to work out the modalities for the compensation.

Talking about the 3 arrested BSF personnel in connection with the alleged killing of Roning Nongkynrih, the minister said that once the arrest has taken place, the preliminary enquiry from the BSF has started.

The arrested BSF personnel have been identified as–Moni Singh, a Head Constable, Sengel Singh Constable and driver Kdam Kishore.

“There has been violation of SOPs by BSF. More importantly what also needs to be taken note of is, why were they (BSF) in a civilian area when they are supposed to be posted at the international border. Their primary duty is to guard the border. There are a lot of illegal activities going on along the borders. Crimes, smuggling and illegal infiltration that might alter the demography of Meghalaya,” the Minister said.

It may be mentioned here that, 32-year-old Roning Nongkynrih of Jalynteng village was shot dead by a BSF personnel while he was ferrying cattle in a lorry.

The BSF personnel who shot the trucker killing him on the spot has reportedly been suspended from duty with immediate effect.
