The eight edition of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association India Region Conference is underway in Guwahati. This is the first time the conference is being held in Assam.
The event, which is being held at the Assam Assembly, is being attended by delegates from 53 Commonwealth nations. Earlier, the event was inaugurated by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. The theme of the conference is ‘Strengthening Legislative Oversight to help Optimise Development Outcomes for the Aspirational Sections of Society.’
The valedictory session of the conference will be held on April 12. Om Birla, Assam Governor Professor Jagdish Mukhi will be attending the session.
Earlier, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla addressed the inaugural session of the 8th CPA Conference.
Addressing the session, Birla highlighted India’s Parliamentary Democratic System, stating it to be one of the oldest. Birla further said that India is a strong supporter of democratic values, virtues, and governance policies and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, addressing the gathering, said that it is a proud moment for Assam to host the event and this day will be marked in the legislative annals of the state as a “Red Letter Day.”
Meanwhile, addressing the gathering, the Chairman of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, Ian Liddel-Grainger, stated that the aim of the association has always been to connect, develop, promote, and support parliamentarians and staff across the commonwealth to identify benchmarks of good governance and implement the enduring values of the commonwealth.
