Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Monday recalled Dipali Borthakur, known as the “Nightingale of Assam,” on her 2nd death anniversary.

“Dipali Bortakur Baideu touched everyone’s heart with her beautiful voice. Baideu’s melodious songs will always resonate among us…” Sonowal tweeted.

Borthakur who gifted many evergreen songs to the Assamese audience breathed her last on December 21, 2018.

Born to Bishwanath Borthakur and Chandrakanti Devi at Sonari in the then Sivasagar district of Assam on Jan 30, 1941, Dipali Borthakur started singing from a very young age. Her first recorded song was ‘Mor Bopai Lahori’ which she recorded at All India Radio in 1958.

She had many popular songs to her credit including-Sonor Kharu Nelage Mok, Chenai Moi Jao Dei, Samay Pale Amar Phale Abar Aahi Jaba.

She recorded her last song in 1969 and has been confined to a wheelchair since 1970 after suffering from a complex neuron disease.

The eminent singer married Neel Pawan Baruah, one of the most celebrated artists of Assam, in 1976 but had to keep away from singing due to her ailment.

A recipient of a whole lot of awards in recognition to her contribution to the Assamese music industry, Dipali Borthakur was conferred the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award of the country, in 1998.
