In a shocking incident, two close aides of Manipur Agriculture Minister Oinam Lukhoi Singh were shot dead in a suspected case of pre-poll violence at Samurou area of Wangoi Assembly Constituency in Imphal West District. The sensational development comes ahead of the ensuing assembly polls scheduled for February 27 and March 3.
The deceased duo, identified as Abujam John and Abujam Tomba, were killed on the the night of January 9th.
According to sources, Abujam John died on the spot in Samurou while Tomba, a Manipur police personnel, succumbed to his injuries at a nearby hospital late last night.
Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh visited the families of the deceased along with Agriculture Minister O. Lukhoi Singh today.
Meanwhile, irate locals of the area came out in protest this morning and blocked the Mayai Lambi Road. However, the situation was brought under control after the police intervened. Investigation into the case is already underway on a war footing.
Notably, this is the second instance of suspected pre-poll violence in Manipur after the Heirok shooting which killed 20-year old N. Rohit and severely injured his father last December.
