Schools for classes 1-12 to reopen in Maharashtra beginning next week

Maharashtra will reopen schools for classes 1-12 abiding by Covid-19 protocols on January 24, said Maharashtra School Education Minister Varsha Gaikwad said today.

As per reports, State Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has agreed to the proposal.

It may be mentioned that schools in Maharashtra announced the closure of schools earlier this month amid the rising Covid cases and amid fears of the Omicron variant in the state.

The announcement comes just days after Health Minister Rajesh Tope stated that the state government will make a decision on resuming physical education classes across the state within the next 10-15 days.

The Education Minister said that they have also decided to reopen pre-primary schools from January 24.
Minister Gaikwad said that after the number of Covid-19 cases increased, the government decided to discontinue the school (offline) sessions. However, after consulting with experts, it was decided to begin the sessions where the number of cases is low, based on the local Covid situation.
She expects that a decision will be made this week. She expressed hope that the proposal would be taken seriously by the chief minister.
The minister furthermore, emphasised the importance of vaccinating students aged 15 to 18 years old and urged both teaching and non-teaching staff to get fully vaccinated.
