In an Odisha forest, up to 24 elephants drank’mahua,’ a traditional country liquor, and slept for hours. When villagers from a nearby village went into the forest to prepare the liquor, they discovered that a herd of elephants had already consumed the intoxicating flowers-fermented water and were fast asleep.
A total of 24 jumbos, who appeared to be drunk, were sleeping near the place where mahua flowers were kept in water in large pots for fermentation, according to villagers living near Shilipada cashew forest in Keonjhar district.
As per PTI report, the villagers went into the jungle at around 6 am to prepare mahua and found that all the pots were broken and the fermented water was missing.

The villagers found that the elephants were sleeping. They consumed the fermented water and got drunk.
As the liquor was unprocessed, the villagers tried hard to wake up the jumbos but failed and after many trials they informed the forest department.
After arriving at the location in the Patana forest range, forest department personnel had to beat drums to wake the herd up. The elephants then went deep into the forest, according to forest ranger Ghasiram Patra.
