In a move that would give a boost to cancer treatment in Mizoram, the Center would sign an MoU agreement with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for the construction of Cancer Super Specialty Hospital in Zembak area on the northeastern outskirts of Aizawl.
This information was shared by Mizoram Health Minister Dr R Lalthangliana. He added that the project, which would be funded by JICA, would provide easier and better treatment facilities to cancer patients not only in Mizoram but also in other northeastern states. He further added that the final MoU for the Rs 700 crore project would be signed on Monday.
Mizoram is now one of the states with the highest incidents of cancer in the country. The Health Minister claimed that Mizoram is one of the fastest developing states in the country in terms of public health and the state has recorded the lowest Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) in the country for two consecutive years. He added that Mizoram holds first rank among small states in the Health Index of NITI Aayog.
Lalthangliana also said that the state government is making efforts to set up health clinics in 235 more villages under the state’s flagship program- the Socio-Economic Development Policy (SEDP). Funds have been allocated for the project, he said.
