Is Sakewa festival of the Rai Community of Sikkim being politcised in the Himalayan state?
A controversy has erupted concerning the festival’s celebrations in the state, since the Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) planned another celebration on 30 December at Legship, despite a State Level Sakewa celebration has already been scheduled at Namchi on 26 December by the Akhil Kirat Rai Sangh, the apex body of the community.
The members of the Akhil Kirat Rai Sangh on Saturday has launched an attack on the opposition SDF for allegedly playing politics in the name of the Community festival.
Sakewa celebration Community President Bhoj Raj Rai said that this is being done for political gains.
Speaking to North East Live, publicity secretary of State level Sakewa celebration, Ashit Rai said that SDF is playing politics to divide the community.
Political secretary to Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, Jacob Khaling also reacted to this issue today and said that the celebration of the festival by SDF is being politicized. Instead of joining the celebrations on 30 December at Legship, he advised people join the celebration at Namchi on 26 December.
“The celebrations at Legship is funded by Former Chief Minister Pawan Chamling is only for political benefit,” he added.
