This Christmas in Mizoram will be clean, noise and pollution free. The state government has decided to prohibit the import and sale of fireworks, firecrackers and sky lanterns. An order to this effect would be issued soon, officials in Aizawl said on Tuesday post the meeting where the decision was taken.
Mizoram Chief Secretary Reenu Sharma chaired a meeting attended by officials from the Home, Forest and Health departments, officials from Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC), Pollution Control Board, Aizawl DC and SP as well as representatives of NGOs and Mizoram Merchants Association (MIMA) to discuss the matter.
All local councils, village councils, as well as Young Mizo Association (YMA) branches have been urged to widely publicise and enforce this order as and when notified, more stringently than previous years.
The order would also prohibit the sale and use of drugs and narcotics and plastic pellets firing toy guns.
The stakeholders in the meeting also agreed that awareness must be spread regarding the dangers of pyrotechnic materials.
The Mizoram branch of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) and Mizoram Pollution Control Board would be educating the public about the harmful effects of the use of crackers and other pyrotechnic materials on human health.
The state government has also decided to rope in celebrities as well as other acclaimed personalities from different spheres to spread awareness among the people. You Tubers will also be a part of the campaign, the meeting decided.
