A DIG level CBI officer-led team is expected to arrive in Guwahati tonight, and begin investigations from tomorrow into the Assam Sub Inspector Junmoni Rabha’s death case, informed DGP GP Singh.
In a significant development, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken charge of the investigation into the death of Assam Police Sub Inspector (SI) Junmoni Rabha. The decision to transfer the case from the CID Assam to the premier investigating agency came after Assam Director General of Police (DGP) GP Singh visited the CBI office in New Delhi on June 12.
The decision to transfer the case from the CID Assam to the premier investigating agency came after Assam Director General of Police (DGP) GP Singh visited the CBI office in New Delhi on June 12.
Earlier, on May 20, Assam DGP GP Singh officially recommended the transfer of investigations for all four cases registered in Assam’s Nagaon and Lakhimpur districts to the CBI.
This recommendation came after a thorough review of the case and discussions with CID Assam and senior police officers.
Junmoni Rabha, police sub-inspector posted as in-charge of Morikolong outpost in Nagaon district, died during the wee hours of May 16 when her car, which she was allegedly driving, had a head-on-collision with a truck on NH 37 near Sorubhogia in the same district.
With doubts being raised by her family and others on circumstances leading to her death, the Assam government on May 20 said that the case would be handed over to the central agency for a fair probe.
The news was also shared by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on social media today where he said that the Centre has assigned the investigation of the case to the CBI. The CBI will probe whether Junmoni’s death, which caused a lot of sensation in the state, was a road accident or if it was something else.
Meanwhile, Junmoni’s mother expressed happiness that the CBI would now be probing the matter.
