Assam health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday clearly stated that council elections in the Bodo Heartland is not in any way possible considering the prevailing COVID-19 situation.

He further added that the Bodo Territorial Council will be formally known as the Bodo Territorial Region as per the historic Bodo Accord signed in January this year.

Briefing newspersons, Sarma added that Governor Jagdish Mukhi has already given his consent to the development. The four districts Kokrajhar, Baksa, Chirang and Udalguri will be henceforth known as Bodoland Territorial Region.

A commission will look after the inclusion and exclusion of villages in the BTR.

“The commission will be headed by former Assam chief secretary P P Verma. There will be three other members—BTC administrator Rajesh Prasad, Jayanta Basumatary ABSU representative, Dalim Bayan as the representative of other communities,” said Sarma.

Meanwhile, Sarma added that the Centre is working on all modalities to implement the historic Bodo Accord in letter and spirit. He said that Home Minister Amit Shah is closely monitoring the entire progress into the matter.
