BSF Trooper Severely Injured in Smuggler Attack Near Indo-Bangladesh Border in Tripura

The injured trooper, identified as Harish Chandra Pandey of the 150th BSF battalion, sustained a deep head wound.

In a rising wave of cross-border tensions along the Indo-Bangladesh border, a Border Security Force (BSF) trooper was severely injured on Friday after being attacked by a suspected smuggler in Tripura’s Sepahijala district.

The injured trooper, identified as Harish Chandra Pandey of the 150th BSF battalion, sustained a deep head wound, raising serious concerns about his condition.

The incident took place near Gate No. 188 in the Dudh Pukur area of Bagber, under the jurisdiction of Bakshanagar police station. According to reports, Pandey and another BSF trooper were patrolling the area when they approached a young man, later identified as Riyad Hossain, for questioning. Hossain had allegedly crossed the border fence on October 2nd, but his return route was unclear, sparking suspicions of smuggling.

According to Hossain’s mother, a heated argument broke out between him and the BSF troopers. During the altercation, the BSF personnel fired a warning shot in self-defense. In response, Hossain allegedly struck Pandey on the head with a bamboo stick, leaving a severe 10-centimeter cut.

Pandey was quickly taken to the Bakshanagar Social Health Centre, where doctors treated the wound with 15 stitches. Due to the seriousness of the injury, he was later referred to GBP Hospital in Agartala for a CT scan to check for internal damage. “The cut was deep, and we had to perform 15 stitches. His condition is stable, but further scans are necessary to rule out any complications,” a doctor at the health center reported.

Riyad Hossain fled the scene immediately after the attack and is currently on the run. Local police and BSF officials have launched a manhunt to apprehend him.

Authorities are increasingly worried about rising violence along the border, where smuggling and illegal crossings remain significant challenges for security forces. Despite increased patrols and surveillance by the BSF, Friday’s attack underscores the dangerous conditions faced by those guarding the sensitive border areas.
