Breaking Barriers: Lalawmpuii Becomes Mizoram’s Lawngtlai Town First Female Auto Rickshaw Driver

In a remarkable story of grit and determination, Lalawmpuii, a 48-year-old mother of four, has broken gender barriers to become the first female auto rickshaw driver in Lawngtlai town, Mizoram. For the past four months, she has been navigating the roads of her town, defying stereotypes and earning admiration from her community.

Lalawmpuii’s journey began with her deep resolve to secure a better future for her children. Her eldest is 21 years old, while her youngest are 14-year-old twin boys. After her husband, who previously drove the family’s auto rickshaw, developed health issues and transitioned to carpentry, the family initially hired drivers to operate the vehicle. However, Lalawmpuii felt compelled to take charge herself, inspired by her family’s financial needs and her children’s education.

“I wanted to make sure my children have the best education. That’s what drove me to step into this field,” she said.

Although a few women in Lawngtlai occasionally drive private auto rickshaws, Lalawmpuii stands out as the only regular and registered driver among the town’s auto rickshaw community.

Lalawmpuii now operates her autorickshaw daily, ensuring she completes her work before 4 p.m. to be available for her children after school. Despite being in a traditionally male-dominated field, she reports no significant challenges or negative experiences.

Her groundbreaking story has garnered widespread attention, with Mizoram’s Chief Minister recently acknowledging her achievement on X. “Pi Lalawmi, the first female autorickshaw driver from Lawngtlai town, is breaking barriers and redefining gender roles, symbolizing the growing empowerment of women in unconventional fields,” CM Lalduhoma wrote on X.

Pi Lalawmpuii’s courage and determination have not only supported her family but also set an example for women in Mizoram and beyond, proving that barriers can be broken with resilience and hard work.
