Border issue: Assam, Meghalaya CMs to meet in Guwahati tomorrow

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and his Meghalaya counterpart Conrad Sangma will meet in Guwahati tomorrow to discuss on the prevailing border issues between the two states.

The Chief Minister Level talks between Assam and Meghalaya will be on the Border ‘Difference of Area’ and will take place at the State Guest House in Khanapara.

Deputy Chief Minister Incharge Home, Prestone Tynsong speaking to the media said the two Chief Ministers will meet this week. Tynsong added, the matter has been taken up with the Assam government and a joint meeting took place yesterday to discuss the border skirmishes.

It may be mentioned that a border Meeting was convened at Lapangap village on Thursday. The meeting was attended by the Deputy Commission and the Superintendent of Police of both West Jaintia Hills district and West Karbi Anglong District. The meeting was also attended by border magistrates of both the districts and village representatives of the two states. The meeting deliberated upon various parameters to bring back peace and normalcy in the area.

Earlier, on September 13 both the Chief Ministers had met in Shillong on the sidelines of an event wherein both of them also discussed about the border issue. It was then Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had informed that he along with his Meghalaya counterpart Conrad Sangma would be meeting in Guwahati in the first week or second of October.

It may be mentioned that both the Chief Ministers are working on confidence building measures so that no differences crop up after they jointly visit the areas of dispute.

Assam and Meghalaya have partially resolved decades long dispute in 6 of the 12 areas of dispute so far.
In March last year, Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma and his Meghalaya counterpart Conrad Sangma signed a “historic” agreement in presence of Home Minister Amit Shah to officially put an end to disputes in 6 sectors that were taken up for resolution in the first phase.
