There seems to be no end to the twist and turns in Meghalaya politics. While the NPP in all probability will end up battling its own coalition partners in the Ranikor by-poll, the by-poll in South Tura too may not be a smooth ride for the party.
The state BJP which is a part of the NPP-led coalition, is keeping Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and company on tenterhooks as far as fielding a candidate in South Tura is concerned despite the CM’s appeal to the coalition partners not to field any candidate from the constituency.
Speaking exclusively to Northeast Live BJP leader A L Hek said while the party will back the NPP candidate in the Ranikor by poll, it would have to take call on its future course of action in South Tura in an executive committee meet.
Hek argued that the BJP’s candidate from South Tura Billykid Sangma had secured the second highest votes in the constituency during the assembly elections an if denied the right to contest, he may switch over to some other party.
Hek reiterated that a thorough discussion is required before the BJP can take a call on whether to back Conrad Sangma in South Tura or field its own candidate.
