Big Boost to Health Infra in Arunachal, State to Get 3 More Medical Colleges

Arunachal Pradesh is poised to make significant strides in medical education, healthcare infrastructure, and the well-being of its citizens.

Arunachal Pradesh is set to witness a significant boost to its healthcare and medical education infrastructure with the announcement by Chief Minister Pema Khandu of the establishment of three new medical colleges in the coming years.

Speaking at an induction ceremony at the Tomo Riba Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (TRIHMS) in Naharlagun, Khandu shared plans to set up a second medical college in Pasighat, followed by another in Namsai under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. Additionally, a new medical college will be established in the West Kameng-Tawang region.

The induction of 100 new MBBS students at TRIHMS was hailed as a historic achievement by Khandu, who celebrated the expansion of the institute’s capacity. This year, the number of MBBS seats at TRIHMS has been increased from 50 to 100, a long-awaited goal for the state government since the college’s inception. Of the 100 seats, 85 are reserved for Arunachal Pradesh Scheduled Tribe (APST) students, a significant increase from the previous 30, ensuring more local youths can pursue a career in medicine.

Khandu expressed his satisfaction with these advancements, stating that the state government had kept its promise to enhance TRIHMS’s capacity. He recalled the historic day in 2018 when the first-ever MBBS batch was inducted, and how those students have since completed their internships and graduated. The second batch has also completed its final MBBS exams and is now undergoing its internship.

Looking ahead, Khandu emphasized the need for TRIHMS to continue expanding its offerings. The Chief Minister announced that the state government has approved the start of Postgraduate (MD/MS) courses in 12 specialities, along with a super-speciality course (DM in cardiology). To accommodate this expansion, a new 500-bed super-speciality block is also in the works, with central government assistance.

Khandu also lauded the exceptional performance of TRIHMS’s medical staff, who have played a critical role in saving lives through complex surgeries and emergency medical procedures. However, he highlighted two major public health concerns that need immediate attention: the rising incidences of cancer and kidney diseases.

In response, Khandu noted a recent Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the B Borooah Cancer Institute and the State Cancer Society of Arunachal Pradesh to address the increasing cancer rates in the state. Furthermore, a new 200-bed Regional Cancer Center is being constructed in Midpu, near Doimukh.

On the issue of kidney diseases, the government has approved the creation of a new Department of Renal Science and Kidney Transplantation at TRIHMS, in collaboration with Sir Gangaram Hospital. Khandu expressed optimism that the first kidney transplant surgery will take place at TRIHMS once the new operation theatre complex is completed.

The induction ceremony was attended by various dignitaries, including Health and Family Welfare Minister Biyuram Wahge, Itanagar MLA Techi Kaso, and senior health officials, as well as faculty members, doctors, and students of TRIHMS. The CM also participated in the 8th governing council meeting of the institute earlier in the day.

With these strategic developments, Arunachal Pradesh is poised to make significant strides in medical education, healthcare infrastructure, and the well-being of its citizens.
