Former Indian football captain Bhaichung Bhutia arrived in Agartala in Tripura on Wednesday and took part as the Chief Guest at the final match of Tipra Football League (TFL) which was held at the Khumulwng stadium between Gomati and West Zone.
The league, organised for the first time by the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), aimed at encouraging sports and fitness besides motivating them to take up sports as a career.
The organisers also wanted to create awareness about the menace of abuse of drugs among the youths and increasing Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) cases because of it.

Appreciating the initiative taken by the TTAADC, Bhutia viewed that this is probably the ‘beginning’ of football in Tripura.
According to him, there is a need to channelise the youths of entire northeast India towards sports which is the right energy to fight against the menace of drugs and other anti-social activities.
Meanwhile, Pradyot Kishore Deb Barman, Tripura’s royal scion and an elected member of the TTAADC, who played a vital role in organising the league, informed that Bhutia has given his consent to be the brand ambassador for the TTAADC in its fight against drugs and HIV.
Moreover, talks are also going on to open a football academy in Tripura.
