Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport is on track to become a key hub for urban air mobility with the upcoming launch of electric air taxis.

In collaboration with Sarla Aviation, Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) is exploring the use of electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, offering a sustainable and efficient solution to the city’s notorious traffic congestion.

Last month, Sarla Aviation and BIAL signed an agreement to explore this innovative air mobility option, focusing on developing electric air taxis that promise faster, cleaner, and more cost-effective transport than traditional helicopter services. This initiative, which is being developed in Karnataka, aims to introduce seven-seater electric flying taxis capable of revolutionizing city travel.

Although operations are still two to three years away, Sarla Aviation’s eVTOL aircraft promises a quieter, cleaner, and more affordable alternative to conventional urban air transport. The company plans to focus on four of India’s busiest cities Bengaluru, Mumbai, Delhi, and Pune with plans to make air taxis a common mode of transport for the public.

One proposed route from Kempegowda International Airport to Electronics City will take just 19 minutes by air, compared to the 152 minutes it currently takes by road. The fare is expected to be Rs 1,700 per passenger.

“We aim to redefine urban air transport with operational efficiency, reduced carbon emissions, and scalable infrastructure. Our electric flying taxis will set new benchmarks in reliability and performance, aligning with global standards for sustainable aviation,” said Adrian Schmidt, co-founder and CEO of Sarla Aviation.

Co-founded by Adrian Schmidt, Rakesh Gaonkar, and Shivam Chauhan, Sarla Aviation is emerging as a leader in the advanced air mobility sector. The team’s expertise comes from their work with leading Western air traffic start-ups Chauhan at Joby Aviation, and Gaonkar and Schmidt at Lilium. Their combined knowledge is driving innovation to create a faster, cleaner, and more efficient urban transport solution.

While regulatory challenges remain, this partnership with BIAL signals a significant step towards addressing Bengaluru’s traffic problems through sustainable aviation technology. Sarla Aviation’s focus on affordable, eco-friendly air travel positions the company as a major player in the future of urban mobility in India.
