Barpeta District Jail in Assam Turns Into Thriving Farming Hub with Inmates Cultivating Crops

A district jail in Western Assam has become a farming hub as inmates engage in multi-crop cultivation. Yes the fields in the jail compound of Barpeta district jail are filled with agricultural produce like paddy, mustard, trees laden with fruits and vegetables, a mini bee farm, and even rare crops like nutritious berries. The Berry farming was taken as a pilot project by the Barpeta District Jail Authority which took its wings. The berry farm, houses around 200 trees producing several precious variants of the fruit Apple Berry, Miss India Berry and Thailand Berry. Vegetables like lady finger, mustard, ginger, brinjal, cabbage, radish and several Indian favourites cauliflower and cabbages, are grown in the jail premises. Additionally, the compound houses a small fishery for inhouse consumption.
