Bangladesh Crisis: Assam’s Socio-Cultural Groups Urge PM Modi to Protect Bangladesh’s Hindu Minorities

Amid reports of attacks on minorities in unrest-hit Bangladesh, several socio-cultural groups in Assam’s Silchar town have urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ensure the safety of Bangladesh’s minority Hindus.

A memorandum was presented to Prime Minister Narendra Modi through the District Commissioner of Cachar.

This appeal, representing the collective voice of the local populace, including various cultural and socio-organizations, underscores the severe humanitarian crisis unfolding in neighbouring Bangladesh.

The memorandum highlights the escalating violence and persecution in Bangladesh following Sheikh Hasina’s ouster as Prime Minister.

Concerned citizens of Silchar have urged Prime Minister Modi to take decisive action to address the ongoing attacks on Hindus and to ensure the safety of these vulnerable populations.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed confidence that the Indian government will address the alleged attacks on Hindus and other minorities in Bangladesh through diplomatic channels.

He assured that while the situation is being handled with patience and caution, the focus remains on ensuring safety and maintaining strict vigilance along the fully sealed Indo-Bangladesh border.

“The Indian government will manage the situation politically and diplomatically with the new administration in Bangladesh. We have been advised to refrain from extensive commentary and to remain patient and tolerant,” Sarma said on the sidelines of a program.

He emphasized that the solution lies not in allowing individuals fleeing persecution from Bangladesh into India but in ensuring their safety and security within their own country.

Sarma noted that organizations such as the UN are equipped to handle the situation diplomatically.

The Chief Minister expressed his reluctance to comment further on the alleged attacks to avoid potential repercussions for minorities in Bangladesh.

Sarma assured that Assam is upholding strict border security measures, permitting entry only to those with valid passports, visas, and bona fide Indian citizenship.
