The Manipur government has once again extended the ban on mobile internet service across Manipur till June 5. This is the fourth extension in less than a month. Internet service in the state was first banned on May 3 when violent clashes broke out and the state has been on the boil since.
The ban has been extended to avoid circulation of hate speech, and rumours and to maintain peace amid reports of incidents of violence still coming in from different parts of the state.
Notably, today’s extension of the ban on internet service has come even as Union Home Minister Amit Shah is in the state since May 29 meeting stakeholders, talking to different communities, Civil Society leaders and student bodies, reviewing the security situation in an effort to bring peace and normalcy back to the state.
