Hospitals are places where people go to get treated. They go there because they trust the doctors and nurses. They trust them with their lives. How will you react if we tell you that there is one hospital in Assam where by nightfall doctors and nurses forget about the patients and indulge in alcohol consumption and gets drunk.
In a shocking incident, some attendants of patients admitted at the JSB Civil Hospital in Chirang have recorded a video that shows doctors and nurses of the hospital bringing in bottles of alcohol into the hospital and having a booze party complete with snacks.
The incident came to light when Dhananjay Basumatary a Chirang resident, arrived at the hospital late last night seeking medical assistance for a relative of his. When he entered the hospital and walked inside looking for the doctor on night duty, to his astonishment, he opened the door of the duty room and saw the doctor on duty and a nurse indulging in a party-like atmosphere. Liquor bottles, packets of cigarettes and snacks scattered all over the place.
According to locals of the area, they believe that the delivery deaths which were reported from the hospital earlier, was because of the negligence of the doctors and nurses in the hospital. It maybe mentioned here that several expecting mothers, newborns, died in the hospital in the past.
Indra Basumatary, the president of the Chirang district committee of the Bodo National Students’ Union, expressed deep concern over the situation and emphasized the need for immediate action. “We cannot tolerate such unprofessional behaviour from doctors and nurses. It is worth noting that last year, more than 15 newborns lost their lives due to alleged medical negligence,” he stated. He further demanded strict measures be taken against those involved in the incident.
