Assam’s pride Hima Das scripted history on Thursday by becoming the first Indian athlete to win a gold medal at the IAAF World Under-20 Athletics Championships.
She clinched the top position in the women’s 400m final race on the third day of competitions at Tampere in Finland and became the first Indian woman to clinch such a position in a track event.
The 18-year-old Das clocked 51.46 seconds to claim the top position. Das had also led the overall time charts in the semi finals with a timing of 52.10 seconds on Wednesday. She also finished the first round heats on Tuesday clocking 52.25 seconds.
Hima Das now joins the illustrious company of star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra, who won a gold medal in Poland in the last edition in 2016 in a world record effort.
Hima’s achievements have brought in a wave of jubilation back home. Winning gold medal has brought in bright smiles on the faces of her family members.
Meanwhile, wishes soon started to pour in after Hima Das’s win. Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the 18-year-old from Assam on achieving this huge feat.
Presdient Ram Nath Kovind also congratulated Hima Das on her great success at the world championships and for making Assam and the nation proud.
Union Minister of sports Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore also congratulated Hima Das for becoming the first athlete to win such a title.
And former cricketers Virender Sehwag and Mohammad Kaif too congratulated the 18-year-old for making the nation proud.
