A woman and a youth were lynched by an angry mob in a village under Dokmoka police station in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district after local residents suspected the woman of practicing witchcraft.

A village teacher who came to the rescue of the elderly woman, who was also mercilessly thrashed to death by the locals. After killing the victim, the villagers reportedly beheaded the corpse and dragged the body to the hilltop and burnt it.

The incident took place at Langhing Lohimapur village in Dokmoka area of Karbi Anglong district. The victim has been identified as 50-year-old Ramavati Halowa.

The local teacher Bijoy Gour who tried to save the woman from the bloodthirsty mob was also mercilessly beaten to death. The incident took place on the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday.

A few days prior to this gory incident, a young girl had died after a brief illness. The villagers in turn blamed witchcraft by the woman for the death leading to the attack.

So far, a total of 9 persons have been arrested in connection with the incident. The arrested persons have been identified as Sanju Gour, Ramsung Gour, Rajen Gour, Krishna Gour, Rabilal Goug, Sitaram Gour, Baigul Gour, Kajal Gour and Jonali Gour.

Meanwhile, six other accused persons are currently absconding. They have been identified as Dipal Gour, Lulu Gour, Mansing Gour, Baburam Gowala, Santosh Gour and Shivalal Gour.
