A team from UNESCO will reach Charaideo district today on a three-day visit. Their primary purpose is to assess the Charaideo Maidam, which has been nominated for World Heritage Site status by the Assam government.
The team will carefully examine the Charaideo Maidam based on the dossier submitted by the state government to UNESCO headquarters through the Indian government earlier this year.
Sources informed that after the visit the UNESCO team may suggest some corrective measures as well, if required.
The proposal for including Charaideo Maidam in the World Heritage site list is expected to be presented during the UNESCO conference in mid-2024.
If approved, it will become the third world heritage site in Assam, after Kaziranga National Park and Manas National Park.
Before the UNESCO team’s visit, a puja was conducted at the Maidam to honour the ancestors of the Ahoms.
