Amid the rapid surge in COVID-19 cases in several districts in Assam, 52 inmates of the Dibrugarh Central Jail tested positive for Coronavirus.

Among the fresh cases, recently arrested ULFA-I leader Jibon Moran who is in judicial custody at the Dibrugarh prison also tested positive for the virus.

The senior ULFA-I leader, who managed the banned outfit’s finances was was relieved from all the positions over his health condition, according to a release issued by the outfit. The 65-year-old returned to mainstream after a gap of three decades.

The prison currently has 530 inmates. Out of them, 223 were tested for the infection. Over the past two days, 52 have been found infected. The inmates who tested positive for the infection have been kept in isolation on the premises.

There are 31 jails in Assam, including six 6 central jails and 22 district jails.

Last year, during the first wave of the infection, over 2,500 inmates in prisons across the state had tested positive for COVID-19.

Prison authorities have taken a series of steps to combat the spread of the virus. Rapid Antigen Tests have been carried out in all prisons along with setting up of isolation facilities on the jail premises.

Dibrugarh district is among the worst affected with 445 new cases in the past 24 hours, as per the data released on Tuesday. The district administration has enforced strict restrictions to curb the infection.
