Assam: Tea garden workers stage protest in Dibrugarh

A massive protest rally was carried out on Monday by the Asom Chah Mazdoor Sangha (ACMS), the frontline organisation of the tea garden workers at the Mancotta ground in Dibrugarh.

The protesters put forth various demands for the betterment of the tea garden community of the state. The tea workers have been demanding scheduled tribe (ST) status, a hike in their daily wage to Rs 351, the formation of a separate autonomous council for the Adivasi community, a proper health care system, sanitization facilities among others.

ACMS General Secretary Rupesh Gowala alleged that injustice was being meted out against the long pending demands of the Adivasi people for several decades.

The protesters stated that the stir would intensify if their demands are not met and they would even target the ministers, MLAs over these issues.

There are around 12 lakh tea garden workers and around 90 lakh people represent the entire tea community in the state.
