To prevent potential traffic bottlenecks, special infrastructural provisions are also being put in place in the surrounding areas.
In a major development ahead of the 2026 elections, Assam is set to witness the completion of a world-class international cricket stadium in Amingaon, Guwahati. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited the construction site today to review the progress and expressed confidence that the stadium will be ready for the public before February 2026.
The stadium, with a seating capacity of 20,000, is currently under rapid construction with over 380 crores and is slated for completion by February 2026. Designed to host all formats of international cricket Tests, One Day Internationals (ODIs), and T20 matches, the facility marks a significant boost to Assam’s sports infrastructure.
To prevent potential traffic bottlenecks, special infrastructural provisions are also being put in place in the surrounding areas.
Speaking to the media during his site visit, the Chief Minister emphasised that the stadium will serve as more than just a sports venue. “This stadium will also be a space for mega musical concerts and other large-scale events,” he said.
As Assam gears up to host the National Games in the coming years, the state is working diligently to bridge the gap in quality sports venues.
Additionally, Chief Minister Sarma also confirmed that reconstruction work for the historic Nehru Stadium in Guwahati will commence next month. This is part of a broader effort to revamp the state’s sporting infrastructure and provide world-class facilities for athletes and spectators alike.
Adding to this ambitious development agenda is the nearly completed Guwahati–North Guwahati bridge, which is expected to be inaugurated in December this year. The bridge, measuring a total of 1,600 metres from bank to bank, includes a 1,240-metre multi-span extra-dosed section featuring 200-metre spans between pylons, the longest in India.
This Rs 2,608 crore mega project, the largest ever undertaken by the PWD, is primarily funded by the BRICS New Development Bank (NDB).
The six-lane bridge will diverge at the southern bank into two three-lane roads: one ending at Santipur opposite Swagat Hospital, and the other reaching Azan Pir Park in Machkhowa.
The full stretch, extending up to Gauripur, will span approximately 6.2 kilometres, with the bridge boasting a width of 33 metres. SP Singla Construction Pvt Ltd of Haryana has been entrusted with the execution of the entire project.
With these landmark developments underway, Assam is poised for a transformative leap in infrastructure, sports, and connectivity, all in time for the upcoming state elections.
