Panic grips Eastern Assam’s Tinsukia district as two persons were shot dead by armed miscreants at a grocery shop in Rupai Siding under Doomdooma police station late Friday night.
Although the needle of suspicion went towards the ULFA-I, police authorities clarified that the incident was related to dacoity.
Out of the two deceased persons, one has been identified as Jit Verma, who was an employee of the grocery shop but the second person’s identity is yet to be identified.
Tinsukia SP Mugdha Jyoti Mahanta, who rushed to the spot after the incident said that one among the two attackers has already been arrested and a massive search operation has been launched to nab the second miscreant.
Reportedly, the miscreants had come to the grocery shop on several occasions earlier and demanded cash but each time they were turned back.
After the incident, the entire business community of the locality expressed their anguish over the alleged laxity on the part of the security forces particularly the police.
Meanwhile, the Paresh Baruah led ULFA (Independent) outfit has released a letter, undersigned by the outfit’s publicity wing member Rumel Asom, to the media denying any involvement in the incident at Rupai.
The outfit also went on to say that the apprehended miscreant Rupantar Moran had no link with any member of the ULFA-I.
