Assam Secretariat goes Solar, becomes India’s first Net Zero civil Secretariat

The Assam government is facilitating all government buildings to be powered by solar energy in a bid to popularise it among the general public as well.
In a big bid to promote solar energy usage in Assam, the state secretariat or Janata Bhawan in Dispur has gone completely solar today.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today inaugurated the solar power project at the Janata Bhawan today whereby all energy source for the secretariat building and ministers’ quarters will be based from solar energy.
While speaking to media, CM Sarma said, “Assam Secretariat has become India’s first Net Zero civil secretariat. 2.5 MW of power is needed per day to run the secretariat, and ministers’ houses and for this, we are paying Rs 30 lakh to APDCL per month as an electricity bill.”
“From today we will be able to save Rs 30 lakh and we will utilise this amount for the poor people”, he added.
CM Sarma further said, “Rs 12 crore has been spent on the entire project. We will be able to collect all spending amount in the next 4 years and we can run this project for the next 25 years with a minimum maintenance cost.”
The inauguration of the 2.5 megawatt solar project will greatly lead to reduced usage of electricity in the Janata Bhawan premises.
