The Supreme Court is all set to hear a written petition regarding the citizenship cutoff date of 1971 in context of Assam next month.
The apex court will hear the writ petition submitted by the Assam Sanmilita Mahasangha in which the cutoff date for citizenship in context of Assam is being sought to be changed from 1971 to 1951.
A one judge bench comprising of Justice Deepak Misra will be hearing out the matter. The petitioner has called for the change in the date based on the Section 6 of the Citizenship Act. The date for the hearing is yet to be fixed.
It is to be noted here that the cutoff date for granting citizenship within the state of Assam is set as March 25, 1971. But in the rest of the country, the cutoff date is set as 1951.
