As of late, wildlife smuggling has been on the rise in Mizoram. Stepping up the crackdown on the illegal wildlife trade, the Serchhip Battalion of Assam Rifles on Tuesday, apprehended a wildlife smuggler from the Champhai district and recovered 2 exotic pythons from his possession.
The smuggler was arrested while trying to cross the Tiau River with crates containing the animals. Assam Rifles personnel recovered two pythons, including a Ball Python and a Burmese Python from the smuggler.
The recovery was made based on specific input from sources informing about the possible smuggling of exotic animals along the Indo-Myanmar Border in Mizoram.
Meanwhile, the seized Pythons and the apprehended individual has been handed over to the Champhai Forest Dept for further legal proceedings.
The smuggler has been identified as Biakneihthanga from Zokhawthar.
