The protest, led by community members and local organisations, highlighted the alarming rise in Golden Langur fatalities in the area.

A rare Golden Langur was tragically killed in a road accident on National Highway 117 near Kadamtola, Bongaigaon, yesterday morning. The incident prompted residents to protest and block the highway, demanding immediate measures to protect the endangered species.

The protest, led by community members and local organisations, highlighted the alarming rise in Golden Langur fatalities in the area.

It needs to be mentioned that, this is the fourth such death in the region within two months, with previous incidents reported in December 2024 and January 2025.

These accidents, primarily caused by vehicular collisions and electrocution, have sparked growing concern among conservationists and residents alike.

The Golden Langur, known for its striking golden fur, is an endangered species native to Assam. Despite ongoing conservation efforts, the lack of effective measures to safeguard these primates has left the local community frustrated. Protesters reiterated their demand for protective measures, including speed controls and insulated electric wires in critical habitats.

Authorities have assured an investigation into the latest incident and promised to explore potential solutions.

However, residents remain sceptical and are urging immediate action to prevent further loss of wildlife.
