Ace pugilist Lovlina Borgohain on Friday created history by becoming the first sportsperson from Assam to assure a medal for India at the Olympics.

Lovlina has stormed into the semi-finals by defeating Chen Nien-chin of Chinese Taipei in the Women’s Welterweight 69 kg Quarter final bout, held earlier today at Tokyo Olympics.

The match which lasted for 3 rounds of suspense ultimately ended with what people across the country had been waiting for with bated breaths. By the end of the final round Lovlina looked dominant.

Speaking after her bout, a confident Lovlina said she is determined to give India the much deserved gold medal. Back home her near and dear ones who were glued to the Television jumped out of joy as soon as the verdict was out.

Her proud father said Lovlina’s game had improved significantly over the years and he was hopeful of his daughter bagging the gold.

Meanwhile, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma congratulated Lovlina Borgohain for her outstanding performance in Tokyo Olympics 2020. Sarma said people of Assam should continue praying for Lovlina so that she can win the ultimate accolade – an Olympic gold.

Showering praises on Lovlina, Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju, said she is extremely dedicated and a hardworking boxer who for sure will bring a gold for the country.

Likewise Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur also congratulated Lovlina for advancing into the semifinals and wished her all the best for securing a gold.

Manipur Chief Minister Biren Singh said he is confident of Lovlina not settling for anything less than a gold.

Praises also poured in from Tokyo Olympic Silver Medalist Mirabai Chanu who thanked Lovlina for assuring India her second Tokyo Olympic medal.

The Golaghat-born pugilist will be in the ring again on August 4 next, where she will lock horns with B Surmeneli of Turkey.
