Several social and student organizations of Dima Hasao on Monday held a protest rally in Haflong against the demand of the Indian People’s Front (IPF) to bifurcate Dima Hasao District and create a separate autonomous district with a separate autonomous council on communal lines, and the demand for the revocation of the N.C. Hills Autonomous Council’s notification regarding verification of the Permanent Residential Certificate (PRC).
The rally started from Lal Field and concluded in front of the Deputy Commissioner (DC)’s office.
The rally was supported by the All Apex Body Coordination Committee and other social organizations in the district.
The participating organizations submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma through the DC Dima Hasao regarding their opposition to IPF’s bifurcation demand.
“The allegation meted against the Dimasas, depriving and discriminating them is in no way relevant to any documented facts and figures. Their (IPF)’s main agenda is to create communal disharmony among various ethnic groups, brake down Law and Order situation, derail socio-economic development and infrastructural development taking place in Dima Hasao,” the representation submitted to CM read.
“We want peace in Dima Hasao. We will live together. We will not accept bifurcation in communal lines. If they (IPF) continue their demand we will take a big step in future,” Kailen Daolagupu, President of Jadikhe Naisho Hosom (JNH) said.
Daolagupu said that the protest rally was carried out because a few former Council leaders who have joined IPF have been trying to break the peace in Dima Hasao by calling a bandh, which is not being supported by the majority.
