After a gap of more than 13 months, poachers killed a rhino in Assam’s Kaziranga National Park and took away the horn.
The carcass of the rhino was found in the Agaratoli range of the park.
According to the forest department, the poachers killed the rhino with AK-47. The forest department officials recovered eight empty shells of an AK-47 assault rifle at the spot.
There was no instance of poaching in the national park since April 1, 2019.
Terming the incident as unfortunate Nature Care and Tourism Education Foundation president Julin Boruah who is also known as the Rhino Man of Assam said, “There was no incident of killing of rhino for last one year. For that the credit goes to the Assam Government, especially the forest department, police, local administration and the natives. But the poachers have taken advantage of ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The forest department will take appropriate action. They are doing a lot. We should support them.”
