Assam mourns former CM Tarun Gogoi’s demise

Tarun Gogoi, one of the most popular politicians of Assam, who adorned the post of chief minister for three consecutive terms passed away on Monday at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in Guwahati.

The last rites of the veteran Congress leader will be performed with full state honours.

“With deep pain, I would like to inform the people of Assam, honourable former chief minister of Assam Tarun Gogoi passed away at 5.34 PM. The superintendent of GMCH has formally declared Tarun Gogoi’s death at 5.34 PM,” said State Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal took to Twitter to express his grief over the demise of the former Chief Minister.

Sonowal tweeted, “I express heartfelt condolences on the demise of former Chief Minister, a tall leader & our most respected Tarun Gogoi da. It’s the end of an era in Assam’s public life. He was so vibrant and full of life until a few days back, couldn’t believe this sad news.”

“Tarun Gogoi was a people’s leader who had great contribution in Assam’s political and public sphere. Even though we were in Opposition parties, we shared a wonderful rapport and he was a guiding figure. My deepest condolences to his family and well-wishers,” he added.

Leaders and well-wishers cutting across party lines have mourned the demise of the stalwart.

The locals of Titabor, the constituency which Gogoi represented in the Assam Legislative Assembly and where the senior leader was born broke into tears following the death of the popular leader.
