The Assam and Mizoram governments have expedited the efforts to resolve the vexed border issue between both the states. A crucial meeting is underway in Guwahati to deliberate on the matter. While the Assam delegation is headed by Border Affairs minister Atul Bora, the Mizoram delegation is led by Home Minister Lalchamliana.
It may be mentioned that this will be the third round of talks between the high-level delegations. Meanwhile, both the sides have affirmed to resolve disputes at the earliest.
Following the Lailapur incident in July 2021, both sides sat down for talks in August. Subsequently, the respective state governments were engaged in talks at the highest level, with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and his Mizoram counterpart Zoramthanga deliberating on the matter in November, 2021 .
While Mizoram stakes its claim over a 509 square mile stretch as its original boundary according to the inner line reserve forest notified in 1875 by the British, Assam considers the map prepared by Survey of India in the year 1933 as the legitimate boundary.
