A crucial meeting is underway between the Chief Secretaries of Assam and Mizoram in New Delhi to discuss the inter-state border issue. The meeting is held with an aim to diffuse escalating tensions along the two state’s shared border.
Assam Chief Secretary Jishnu Baruah and his Mizoram counterpart Lanunmawia Chuango are holding the talks at the Gujarat Bhawan.
The meeting comes following fresh escalation along the inter-state border in Hailakandi and Kolasib districts with police personnel from both sides camping in the disputed area to prevent further flare up.
It may be mentioned that fresh tensions erupted along the Assam-Mizoram border earlier this month with Mizoram accusing Assam of encroaching 2.5 km inside its territory, destroying plantations. Police personnel from both sides have been camping side by side in the area of dispute since then.
Three districts of Mizoram – Aizawl, Kolasib and Mamit share about a 164.6 km long border with Assam’s Cachar, Karimganj and Hailakandi districts.
