Chief Minister Conrad Sangma today gave a detailed briefing on the Assam Meghalaya border talks in the state legislative assembly.

Sangma informed that on July 23rd both the CMs met in Shillong and took a decision that 6 areas of difference would be taken up in the first phase to resolve the long pending issue. He added that following this regional Committees were formed by both the states and the objective of these committees would be to visit these areas of differences and prepare a report and subsequently submit the same to their respective Chief Ministers who would in turn discuss the matter with the GOI together after compiling both the reports.

Sangma added that 30 of the 36 disputed villages along the inter-state border with Assam have been recommended by regional committees to remain in Meghalaya.

The 36 villages cover a 36.9 sq km area, while the 30 villages are spread over 18 sq km area.

No new areas of differences shall be added to the already identified 12 areas, Sangma added.
