Ahead of the meeting with Union Home minister Amit Shah on inter-state border talks, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has made a significant statement on the Assam Meghalaya border issue.
Chief Minister Sangma said that there may not be a perfect solution to the long-pending issue which can be considered as a Win-Win situation for Meghalaya.
However, elaborating on the matter, Conrad Sangma cited the example of the Tarabari area, where the residents of the 4 square km area have expressed their willingness to come under the administrative control of Meghalaya.
The area currently remains under the administrative control of Assam. Conrad Sangma said that the Assam government has agreed in principle to the outcomes of the public hearing conducted by the Regional Committees of both states.
Sangma said that people in the Tarabari area comprising of 8 villages have chosen to remain in Meghalaya, although the residents of these villages have been enjoying every facility provided by the Assam government.
While maintaining that decision making in terms of resolving the border issue was a tough one, Conrad Sangma is hopeful of a solution as he feels that people of both states have suffered for a long time.
It may be mentioned that Sangma had yesterday informed that 30 of the 36 disputed villages along the inter-state border with Assam have been recommended by regional committees to remain in Meghalaya.
The 36 villages cover a 36.9 sq km area, while the 30 villages are spread over 18 sq km area.No new areas of differences shall be added to the already identified 12 areas, Sangma added.
