Assam-Meghalaya Border Dispute: Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar Seeks Report From DC For Villages Under Block – I

First Published: 28th January, 2025 17:21 IST

The second phase of border talks between Meghalaya and Assam is set to begin soon, focusing on resolving the remaining areas of difference.

In a significant move to address the long-standing border disputes between Meghalaya and Assam, the Regional Committee, led by Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, has sought a detailed report on the number of villages in the disputed Block-I area of West Jaintia Hills district.

This effort is part of the broader initiative to resolve conflicts in six contentious regions, including Langpih in West Khasi Hills and Block-II in Ri Bhoi, which have suffered years of neglect and uncertainty.

Deputy Chief Minister Dhar said, “During our meeting last December, I directed the deputy commissioner to gather comprehensive data on villages near the border, including population details, tribal composition, and current status. This report is expected within three months and will serve as the basis for our formal recommendations to the government, enabling further dialogue with Assam.”

This announcement has rekindled hope for border residents who have long endured neglect. Recently, a delegation from the Hynniewtrep Achik National Movement (HANM) met Dhar to urge expedited action. HANM highlighted the plight of communities in eight border villages — Mowpud, Shnong Thymme, Mowbhar, Mowjem, Mowlain, Madan Nangkylla, Sapiang, and Langet — where basic infrastructure and development are virtually non-existent.

During visits to these villages, HANM members encountered elders recounting their struggles due to a lack of essential services and support. These communities have been left isolated, with their voices largely unheard.

The second phase of border talks between Meghalaya and Assam is set to begin soon, focusing on resolving the remaining areas of difference. Dhar emphasised that these discussions would proceed only after consultations with the autonomous district councils (ADCs), ensuring a collaborative and inclusive approach.
