Tension prevails at Dholai in Assam near the Mizoram border after locals blocked the highway and staged a protest over the death of a handyman accused of murdering a driver in the custody of Mizoram police.

Angry locals and family members of Nitin Singh blocked the road and raised slogans after his mortal remains reached home from Mizoram.

Nitin Singh died in police custody in Mizoram and was held for the murder of truck driver Praveen Singh.

Yesterday the news of his death reached his family members who cried foul play at the turn of development.

Locals blocked the highway to Mizoram at Ramprasadpur while demanding that police and authorities in Assam should undertake a proper probe into the matter.

Earlier, post mortem was conducted at the Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) following which it was brought to Dholai which however heated up the situation among the locals alleging it was murder in police custody in Mizoram.

Meanwhile, heavy security has been deployed in the area to prevent any untoward incident from happening.

It is to be noted that Nitin was the handyman who was accused of having murdered truck driver Praveen Singh and had been detained in Mizoram by the police.

However, protests had broken out in Dholai on February 1 alleging that Nitin was innocent and there was foul play behind Praveen’s murder.

Even then police had to intervene and calm down the situation while promising a fair probe into the case.

Mizoram Police officials had reportedly claimed that Nitin committed suicide while in their custody.
