The contest for the Majuli by-elections today heated up with the Assam Jatiya Parishad announcing Chittaranjan Basumatary as their candidate. Basumatary has become the candidate for the AJP-Congress alliance in Majuli and is being pitted against the BJP’s Bhuban Gam.
It is to be noted here that Chittaranjan Basumatary had contested unsuccessfully for the Dhemaji seat on an AJP ticket, where he lost to now cabinet minister Ranoj Pegu.
Soon after the announcement, Basumatary stated that the BJP candidate is Guwahati-based and has no real connection with Majuli. He said that the BJP candidate would not be able to connect with the voters and, hence, he is bound to lose.

Meanwhile, BJP candidate Bhuban Gam has called out Basumatary as a sacrificial lamb for both the AJP and the Congress, as they cannot both win Majuli.
Meanwhile, Congress workers in Majuli are not at all hopeful that Basumatary will win the Majuli seat. The Congress workers of Majuli have been upset with their leadership for giving away the Majuli seat to AJP. In this regard, Congress workers are calling on Basumatary as a scapegoat for both Congress and AJP to blame for their imminent failure.
And it is not just Congress members who are unhappy with Basumatary being the candidate for Majuli. The AJP workers of Majuli themselves are not happy with the candidate selection. Majuli’s AJP unit president, Sishudhar Doley, expressed the party workers’ unhappiness at the choice of candidate.
