IMA and JDA said that Bonrai Rongmei provoked the doctors and after that he has also given them death threats
The Indian Medical Association (IMA), Cachar branch and Junior Doctor’s Association (JDA) have strongly condemned the assault on Aurag Dey, the intern doctor of Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) in Assam’s Barak Valley, and demanded immediate withdrawal of the suspension order against him.
The SMCH authorites last week rusticated doctor Anurag Dey for 3 months following a complaint against him of allegedly kicking and brutally beating up Bonrai Rongmei (Drug Inspector of Cachar district) inside the hospital on September 9.
Rongmei said that when he along with his cousin sister had visited a relative of theirs who was admitted at the SMCH. While they were there with the patient, Anurag Dey came to collect the patient’s blood sample. When his cousin sister asked Dey if he was an intern or postgraduate intern, this infuriated the doctor and an argument broke out between them.
Bonrai had alleged that Anurag Dey along with other intern doctors grabbed him, took him to a room and brutally assaulted him with an iron rod and called him Chinese.
Regarding this, the IMA, Cachar and JDA held a meeting on Saturday and said that Rongmei has misused his power as a government official and assaulted an on duty doctor in a drunken state inside the premises of a government institution during non visiting hours. The medicolegal reports of the concerned official confirmmed the same.
IMA and JDA said that Bonrai Rongmei provoked the doctors and after that he has also given them death threats.
” We have learnt that Bonrai Rongmei has similar record of misbehavior and misuse of power in SMCH back in 2021. Hence we demand immediate withdrawal of the suspension order against doctor Anurag Dey,” said IMA and JDA.
The medical associations also demanded implementation of stringent security measures to assure the safety of doctor Aunrag Dey and other doctors of SMCH who have received death threats following this incident.
Additionally, they said that the entire medical fraternity will launch a state wise mass agitation if Bonrai Rongmei was not strict punishment.
